Marie A. Johanek, 84, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, entered into eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009. Marie was born on March 3, 1924, in Manitowoc, to the late Edward and Theresa Riederer Wallander. On Oct. 12, 1943, Marie married Joseph J. Johanek at St. Mary Catholic Church in Clarks Mills. Joseph preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1981. Marie was a cook for the former Holy Innocents Catholic School and Roncalli High School. She had spent many years as a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul. Marie enjoyed spending her time making quilts, traveling, cooking, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Daniel (Patricia) Johanek, Appleton; Edward (Karen) Johanek, Appleton; John (Tina) Johanek, Whitelaw; Jerome (Lori) Johanek, Green Bay; one daughter and son-in-law, Kristine (Joseph) Parma, Two Rivers; nine grandchildren, John (Lynn) Johanek, Lisa (Nathan) Forst, Jeremy (Kami) Johanek, Jacob (Jamie) Parma, Bill, Mike and Philip Johanek, Joseph and Anna Johanek; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Robert (Elaine) Wallander, Edward (Lucille) Wallander, Thomas Wallender and Allen (Susie) Wallander; one sister, Laura Braun; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Wallander and Lois Wallander; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; two brothers, Mike Wallander and Bernie Wallander; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores (Hal) Schuh and Rita (Chuck) McKeil.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi - Waldo, on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, from 10 a.m. until the beginning of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Rev. Daniel Felton will officiate with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum.

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, N. 11th and St. Clair Streets, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Marie's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff Laurel Grove and Shady Lane Nursing Home for the care they had provided.
