Born in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland, Monsignor James Daniel McCartan entered All Hallows Seminary in Dublin where he was trained to become a missionary priest. Ordained in July 1955, he chose Sale Diocese as his destination. Parish priest from 1987 till 2003, in the year 2000 he was named Domestic Prelate of His Holiness and Vicar General of the Diocese. Retiring to Warragul in 2007, he died at the Amberlea Aged Care, Drouin, aged 83.
