Pulitzer Prize Winning Author, Activist. A historian, he received a Pulitzer Prize for his work "Fin-De-Siecle Vienna: Politics and Culture" (1980). His father, a German banker, his mother of Jewish heritage, young Carl was exposed to an extensive amount of political discussion. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Columbia and later received a PhD. from Harvard. During World War II, he served with the Office of Strategic Services. Following the war, he taught History at Wesleyan University and became interested in the political structure of post-war Europe and became an expert on the subject of early 20th Century Vienna. During the 1960s when activism became a mainstream in American culture, he took up a teaching position at to the University of California at Berkeley and became a proponent of the Free Speech Movement. In 1969, he moved back East and taught at Princeton University.
