Roderick Bain Mackenzie was the youngest of three born to John Mackenzie and Margaret Campbell Pendrill in Malta, where his father was the Director of Public Works.
He was a graduate of Exeter College, Oxford, where he also received his master's degree before serving as a Clerk in Religious Orders.
After his 1868 marriage to Josepha Peyton Robertson (1835-1895), he went on to serve for over 42 years as parish priest for St. Peter-at-Gowts, Lincoln, and Sudbrooke in Lincolnshire.
After the death of Josepha in 1895, he married nurse Emily Davis with whom he had two children - Hilda and Dr. Kenneth Fitzgerald Mackenzie (1898-1987).
