Son of Alanson G. and Charlotte A. (Church) Chapin. Married 25 Aug. 1865 to Elizabeth/Louise Watson Thwing, daughter of Rev. Alva Tabor Twing. Ten known children.

Served in the Civil War with in the Sixth Corps of the Fourth Vermont Volunteers. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg and also in the battle of the Wilderness. In 1889 went to Alabama to engage in coal and ice business. Married Aug. 25, 185 to Elizabeth Watson Thwing/Twing
