Benjamin Keith, a native of Vermont and 67 years old, was the last victim to fall by pneumonia, succumbing to that disease at his room on Holden Street last Monday after a very brief illness.

It is hard to conceive of a man more generally liked by a wide circle of acquaintances than "Old Ben", as he was usually spoken of, though not to unless the qualifying adjective was dropped. For up to the last he prided himself on being "spry", was exceptional in that he was still as fond of hops as when in the early days he conducted a dancing school at Columbia, and had no trouble in attending to his duties as employee of the Standard Lumber Company. Kind-hearted, charitable and scrupulously honest, Ben will surely be missed and mourned.

He was buried Wednesday afternoon in Odd Fellow's cemetery under the direction of Bald Mountain Encampment No. 4, of which and Tuolumne Lodge No. 21 of Columbia he was a member. Sierra Rebekah Lodge No. 245 assisted in paying the last tribute of fraternal love to their dead brother, as did Sonora Lodge No. 10. The cortege was led by Steele's cornet band, which volunteered its services, and followed by over thirty Rebekahs and about eighty Odd Fellows. Then came the hearse with the fine casket and many floral offerings, followed by carriages, the first being occupied by Geo. W. Hale, the retired lumberman of Columbia with whom deceased held a responsible position for many years, and Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Knudsen. The general attendance was quite large.
