Dick Langford immigrated to the U.S. in 1847 and moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1852. He lived in a hut on Gogebic Lake, and spent his time prospecting the Gogebic iron ore range. He said he discovered ore near the Colby range in the early 1870's. He continued to prospect until he went blind and died at the Ontonagon County infirmary.
