Hungary President. He served as President of Hungary from May 2, 1990 to August 4, 2000. After graduating from Budapest Pázmány Péter University of Arts and Sciences in 1944 with a law degree, he turned to writing and translating various works from English to Hungarian. During the Second World War, Goncz joined the resistance movement after being told to go to Germany to fight with the Germans. After the war, he worked as a manual laborer and also did some political writing. Goncz was arrested in 1957 for his work during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, but was released under amnesty in 1963. He continued his work in and writing and translating different literary works to his native language. Goncz became involved in politics after the fall of communism in Hungary, first serving in the Hungarian National Assembly and then being elected president on August 4, 1990. He was the second freely elected head of state and first without ties to communism. Goncz was reelected in 1995 for a second term. He was awarded the Vision for Europe award in 2000 for his efforts in promoting a united Europe.
