Harold enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps of the British Army in September 1914, and advanced to Lance Corporal. Harold fought in the Battle of Loos in France and was killed in action at age 29 years while rescuing a wounded soldier.

He was married to Calypso Valetta, actress on June 4,1910. Their son Val was born in December 1911.
