Father of First lady Florence Kling DeWolfe Harding. He used his successful hardware business as a springboard to become Marion, Ohio's wealthiest citizen. He was a strict disciplinarian who often had conflict with his daughter. He also resented his future son-in-law, Warren G. Harding who "shook up" Marion's high society with both the editorial content and success of his newspaper, "The Marion Star". Kling went to great measures to try to stop the marriage of Florence to Warren Harding, but to no avail. Some historians report that Kling and Harding reconciled in later years. He was married to Louisa M. Kling. He was married first to Louisa M. Kling. His second wife was Caroline Beatty Denman Kling.
