He studied medicine with his father, Dr. Samuel Shumway, afterwards graduating from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York City, with high honors in 1848; practised [sic] about ten years in Essex, where many could have testified to his courageous, long rides through drifting snow on the shores of Lake Champlain to relieve their sufferings, when few would dare to brave the weather; he went to Chicago in 1858, and built up a large practice on the West Side; he was esteemed by a large circle, both as physician and friend; probably no other physician in the city had a larger list of patients where no charge was ever made; he was one of the charter members of Hesperia Lodge F. and A. M., a member of Prof. David Swing's congregation, and of the Chicago Medical Society;
