The 1910 census shows 14-year-old Ruth A. living in the household of Henry J. and Jennie Klett in Dubuque, Iowa. (This would put her birth year at 1896.) Scribbled next the word "daughter" is the word "adopted". The conclusion can be drawn that Ruth was adopted by Henry and Jennie between 1900 and 1910.
In 1920, Ruth Klett, age 24, was a servant in the household of Michael McCarthy in Dubuque, Iowa.
She married James Powell Nicholson of Grainger Co., Tennessee, on Oct. 16, 1923, in Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa. They later divorced, according to her death certificate.
The 1930 census shows James Nicholson living on Denby Street in Los Angeles, CA, with a wife named Mary who was 5 years older than he. James indicated that he had first married at age 23 and that Mary had been 28 when she first married. These dates and ages align with "Mary" being Ruth, however, the places of birth given for "Mary" and her parents are misleading -- originally written as "unknown", this was crossed out and "Md" written above.
Ruth's death certificate says she was a cafeteria manager in the Los Angeles City School System for 10 years. Her usual home address was 212 S. Ardmore Ave. Ruth died in the California Convalescent Center in Los Angeles. The death certificate states her birth year as 1900, but this is probably inaccurate. The informant on the death certificate was Stephen Rennick of the same home address.
