Costa Rica President. He served as President of Costa Rica from November 7, 1949 to May 8, 1953. He started his career in journalism where he ended up owning the principal newspaper in the country, Diario de Costa Rica, from which he directed his later political campaign. Ulate Blanco was elected president in 1948, defeating former President Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia and took office the following year. His presidency was known for the extraordinary handling of the economy during the four years of his term. Ulate Blanco retired after leaving office in 1953 and at the time of his death, was well remembered for how he governed the country.
