Opal Carter, 97, of Readstown, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015 at the Bland Bekkadahl Hospice Center in Viroqua.

Born April 3, 1918 in Readstown, WI. To Charles and Amanda (Guist) Carter. Lived in the same house for 90 plus years then moved into Valley View Apartments.

Opal attended school in Readstown thru her Junior year. At that time there was no 4 year high school in Readstown, so she completed her education in Viroqua, WI. She then attended the County Normal School in the same city and began her 48year teaching career at South Ridge. Later she attended college in Lax where she received her BA degree. Her teaching experiences continued in various schools, the last being the new Elementary School in Readstown. Many of her former pupils remained her friends during the years and some still called her Miss Carter.

Opal loved traveling. After purchasing a car she and many friends visited the East Coast, West Coast, Florida, the Dakotas, Alaska and many other locations.

Opal was raised to love the Lord. She attended the Church of Christ her entire life. After she was no longer able to drive she had many friends that saw to it that she made it to church every Sunday. They also helped in taking Opal to her many doctor, dentist, optical and hearing appointments.

During her life, Opal supported several children in foreign countries. She also knitted many sweaters, which were distributed by Guideposts Publication Company. Opal's hands were never idle. Crossword puzzles were her favorite pastime. She loved poetry and had a special talent for writing poems. You could often hear her quoting; The Lord who made the firmament and made the deepest sea. The Lord who hung the stars on high is the Lord who cares for me.

During her stay in the hospital she stated that she was ready to go to Heaven. With the life she lived we can be certain that she is worthy of that home.

Opal is survived by her sister Leola Turner of Harvard, IL, nephew Doyle Schoville of Chino Valley, AZ, nieces Helen (Wayne) Raymond of Fennimore, WI, Barbara (Robert) Miller of Cashton,WI, Joan (Paul) Trott of Shelbyville, TN, Julie (Tim) Cassens of Harvard, IL, Joyce (Jack) Ebert of West Salem, WI and Donna (John) Turner of Marengo, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Hazel (Orville) Holcomb, 2 brothers Herbert (Thelma) Carter and Preston (Jane) Carter, 4 nephews: Charles Carter, Orville Carter Holcomb, David B. Holcomb, and John S. Turner.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 at the Readstown Church of Christ. Pastor Dennis Johnson and Pastor Lance Lorenz will officiate and burial will be in the Readstown Cemetery.
