J. Malcolm Anthony, 89, a former longtime Abilene resident and educator, died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at a Tempe, AZ nursing center.

Mr. Anthony was born to Melvin and Sula Beauchamp Anthony on September 1, 1912 in Dumas, TX, where he graduated from Dumas High School in 1931. That same year, he moved from Dumas to Abilene, where he received a BS Degree from McMurry College (Now McMurry University) in 1935, and a Master of Education Degree from Hardin Simmons University in 1951.
His 40-year career as an educator began with the Wylie ISD in Taylor County (1936-1938) and continued with the Abilene ISD (1938-1975). Mr. Anthony was principal at Fair Park Elementary for 13 years and in 1951, opened Crockett Elementary School, serving as principal for three years. Then North Junior High School (now Franklin Middle School) was opened, and Mr. Anthony served there as principal for six years. When Cooper High School opened in 1960, he was named the first principal there and served for 15 years. Retiring from AISD in 1975, he returned to his Alma Mater, McMurry University to teach one year and to complete 40 years as an educator.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Homebuilders Sunday School Class, and Methodist Men, and served on various committees of the church. He was a 32nd Degree mason with Masonic Lodge #559 and a former member of Abilene Founder Lions Club. Mr. Anthony was a member and former president of Abilene Retired Teacher's Association and a member of State and National Retired Teacher's Association. He served as local district legislative chairman for retired teachers. In 1993, he was inducted into the Cooper High School "Hall of Fame".
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margurite Barrow Anthony, October 25, 1969; his second wife, Helen Patterson Anthony, March 9, 2002; his parents; two sisters, Rosalyn Anthony and Louise Murphy; two brothers, Don Anthony and Hugh Anthony; and a step-grandson, Lorenzo Dow Patterson, V, September 1987.
Survivors include a son – Jack M. Anthony, Jr. of Dallas, TX; a daughter – Jane Anthony Campbell and husband, Larry of Tempe, AZ; a stepson – Lorenzo Dow Patterson, IV and wife, Jane Lancaster of San Antonio, TX; three granddaughters – Laurie Campbell Lange and husband, Brian of Phoenix, AZ; Carrie Campbell Gale and husband, Jon of Gilbert, AZ; and Ellen Anthony Moore and husband, Christopher of New York, NY; two step-grandsons – Kit Russell Patterson and wife, Jill of Fredericksburg, TX; and John Sky Patterson of San Antonio, TX; and six great grandchildren – Kit Russell Patterson, II; Emmalyne Patterson; Nicholas Lange; Elise Claire Lange; Hillary Gale; and Grant Anthony Gale.
The graveside service will be 10 AM Thursday, June 27 in Elmwood Memorial Park with Rev. Derrell Patterson officiating. A memorial service will follow at 11 AM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Permanent Endowment Fund, 1741 Sayles Blvd., Abilene, TX 79605.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home, 542 Hickory.
