Pedestrian Struck By Car Dies Hours Later In Hospital
Joseph Svoboda, 65, a stone mason who is a resident of the town of Kossuth, died at the Holy Family hospital at 4:25 Tuesday morning from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car driven by Fred Bernhardt, Manitowoc, R. 5, on Highway 141 at Rockwood at 7:30 Monday night. Dr. Theo. Teitgen, county coroner, after a talk with the driver of the car, said it was an unavoidable accident and that no inquest would be held. Bernhardt said Svoboda stepped directly into the path of his car and that he was unable to avoid hitting him. With him in the car were his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Kolb of Cleveland who confirmed his story. Svoboda’s skull was fractured, both legs and his nose were broken.
The accident occurred directly in front of the Kliment store in the village. The county ambulance was called and brought the injured man to the hospital here. He lapsed into unconsciousness before he could explain how the accident happened.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Kellnersville with burial at Francis Creek.
A brother, Wencil, is the only survivor.
