Manitowoc Man Drowns While at Pigeon Lake
Charles Peterman, 26, Gets Cramp; Dead at Scene

PIGEON LAKE -
A 26 year old Manitowoc man drowned in Pigeon Lake here late Saturday afternoon after authorities said he developed a cramp while swimming with friends near a diving raft.

The victim, Charles Peterman, was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. R.G. Strong, acting coroner.

Peterman, a painter, had lived at Milwaukee in recent years while working with his brother-in-law, Ralph H. Ording.

Undersheriff Donald Hillstrom, one of the officers who investigated, said the tragedy occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the area off the resort operated by Dave Asman at the north end of the lake.

Survival Efforts Fail
Hillstrom said that Russell Wheelock, Manitowoc, a companion, attempted unsuccessfully to save Peterman, who was described as only a fair swimmer. Wheelock finally pulled Peterman to the surface and applied mouth to mouth resuscitation in the water and on the raft unsuccessfully.

Hilstrom said Peterman drowned within about 15 feet of the raft. The water was estimated to be 12 to 15 feet deep at that point. Efforts to revive Peterman continued unsuccessfully for about a half hour. The body was removed to the morgue at the jail and traffic center at Manitowoc in the Valders ambulance.

Mr. Peterman was born Jan. 17, 1940, at Manitowoc, son of Paul Peterman and Mrs. Ruth Mrotek, of Milwaukee.

Survivors include the parents, two brothers, John and Roger, of Milwaukee; four sisters, Marianne, of Cudahy and Jolene, Trudy and Mrs. Ralph Ording, of Milwaukee and two step-brothers, Michael and Thomas Mrotek, of Milwaukee.

Funeral Tuesday
Funeral services for Peterman will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Paul H. Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 9 o'clock this Monday evening and Tuesday morning until time of services.
