SOPHIA SCHULTZ
(1832 - 1886)

Death of the widow of Heinrich Schultz who lived four miles from here on the Two Rivers Road, last Sat. morning.
While trying to make a fire with some straw, her clothing caught fire and, in running toward the pump, she fell in some dry grass which also caught fire. Her cries brought help, but she was so terribly burned that she died within 24-hours.

Der Nord Westen, 17 June 1886

An old lady named Schultz, living in that portion of the town of Manitowoc north of the city, was burned to death on Saturday last.
She was engaged in making a fire in the kitchen stove when her clothing took fire. She rushed to the pump with her clothes ablaze and in her frantic efforts to quench the flames rolled on the ground igniting the surrounding grass.
The poor woman suffered the greatest agony until death came to her relief.
