Daughter of assassinated Louisiana Gov. and U.S. Sen. Huey P. Long and sister of U.S. Sen. Russell B. Long. Also niece of Louisiana Gov. Earl Long.

Advocate, The (Baton Rouge, LA) - Saturday, January 14, 2006

Rose Long McFarland died of natural causes at her home in Boulder, Colo., on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, following a long illness. She was 88. The daughter of former Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Pierce Long and Rose McConnell, she was born on April 13, 1917, in Shreveport.

She married Dr. Osmyn William McFarland on June 1, 1938, at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge.

Mrs. McFarland lived in Shreveport, Baton Rouge and New Orleans at various times until the McFarland family moved to Boulder in 1953. Even after living elsewhere for many years, however, she always remained a Louisianian at heart! After graduating as valedictorian from Eleanor McMann High School in New Orleans in 1934, she served in Washington, D.C., for one year as secretary to her mother when Mrs. Long replaced her deceased husband as U.S. senator from Louisiana in 1935. Mrs. McFarland attended Newcomb College in New Orleans for one year before transferring to LSU. At LSU, she was president of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, homecoming queen, president of the Associated Women Students and coed vice-president of the student body. She was also elected to the Mortar Board. She graduated with honors with a degree in English in 1938. After moving to Boulder, Mrs. McFarland was active in Newcomers Club, the Symphony Guild and also supported the Nomad Playhouse. She was past president of the LSU Alumni Association of Colorado and of the Tri Delta Alumni Association of Boulder. She attended First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, hiking, traveling and the theater. She loved animals and supported many animal welfare organizations. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren in later years. Everyone who knew her spoke of her graciousness, her outgoing personality and her Southern charm.
Survivors include her two daughters, Marsha M. Budz of Boulder and Terry M. Fluke of Bozeman, Mont.; a son, Rory S. McFarland of Boulder; a son-in-law, David J. Budz of Boulder; and a brother, Palmer R. Long of Shreveport. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Dick Fluke and Scott Fluke, both of Bozeman, Andrew L. Mazal of Portland, Ore., Jennifer R. McDaniel of Westminster, Colo., and Vanessa R. Mazal of Seattle; and a great-grandson, Parker Q. Mazal of Portland. Other surviving relatives include three nieces, Kay Long of Baton Rouge, Pamela Long Wofford of Keymar, Md., and Laura Long Lubin of West Los Angeles; and a nephew, Palmer R. Long Jr. of Shreveport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a brother, former U.S. Sen. Russell B. Long of Louisiana.

According to her wishes, no service is planned. She will be cremated and her remains will be interred in Shreveport next to her mother at Forest Park. M.P. Murphy & Associates of Boulder are handling arrangements.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. McFarland's memory to the LSU Foundation, 3838 W. Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. A memorial scholarship will be set up in her name.
