Dubois was the son of Reuben Frisbee and Sarah Burhans Frisbee. His father died when he was only three years old. He was raised at Roxbury, New York by his step-father, Joseph Woolhiser. Dubois married to Harriet Lydia Finch on 5 April 1855 at West Morrisania, New York and relocated to that place. They had four children; Sarah, who married to William Kuntz; Harry, who married to May Matzka; and two children who died very young. Dubois was a school teacher at Morrisania and at New York City. He retired as a school principal at Bronx, New York about 1915.
