US Congressman. An 1830 graduate of Harvard University, he took up the law profession following graduation. He served as Adjutant General of Rhode Island from 1835 to 1836 and served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1838 to 1840. From 1843 to 1845 he served as Representative from Rhode Island in the United States Congress. He then returned to state politics, serving as a Rhode Island State Senator from 1847 to 1852 and again from 1861 to 1863. He was also the Rhode Island Public School Commissioner from 1849 to 1854 and served as an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from 1868 until his death. He was the son of Congressman Elisha Reynolds Potter(bio by: Jen Snoots)
