Author. He was the son of the Liberal politician, George Otto Trevelyan and great-nephew of Thomas Babington Macaulay. After being educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, he taught modern history. His early books included ‘Giribaldi' and ‘John Bright.' His older brother resigned from Asquith's government in protest at Britain's involvement in the First World War. Equally, George did not wish to fight and instead worked for the British Red Cross in Italy, acquiring funding for ambulances which he also drove along the dangerous Isonzo line. After the war, Trevelyan became a professor of modern history at Cambridge University and served in the post until 1951 when he retired. His books include ‘British History in the Nineteenth Century', ‘History of England', ‘George Otto Trevelyan' and ‘English Social History.'
