DEATH OF MATHIAS EWEN REMOVES PIONEER FARMER OF TOWN OF FRANCIS CREEK

Death of Mathias Ewen, father of John Ewen, chairman of the Manitowoc County board of supervisors, occurred this morning at the home of his son at Francis Creek. The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 am from St. Anne’s church at Francis Creek, of which decedent has been a life long member. Decedent is survived by one son, John, three grandchildren, Rose, Edwin, William Ewen and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Prochaszka, of this city. His wife died twenty six years ago.

Mathias Ewen was born in Gaualgesheim, Germany on October 19, 1838 and came here in 1847, taking up his home on a farm at Francis Creek where he has resided continuously until his death. He was wedded at Francis Creek where the family was reared. Decedent belonged to that sturdy type of pioneers who have made Manitowoc early history so prominent. He was not found wanting when war broke out, enlisting in the 45th Wisconsin Volunteer infantry in 1864 and served with honor and distinction until the end of the war.

He returned to the farm which he converted into a splendid property, now occupied by his son John, with whom he lived up to his death. Many friends of the family will voice sincere regret at news of the demise. He was well known not only in the community where he resided but in this city as well. A number from Manitowoc will attend the funeral.

A Sad Accident

Mathias Ewen, of Francis Creek, met with an accident last evening, that may cause him the loss of a limb. Mr. Ewen was with the crowd which had congregated, upon learning of the fatal accident near that place and remained to serve on a coronor's jury. He started for home and just as he reached his own gate, he made a misstep and fell, breaking his leg in two distinct places, at the ankle and just below the knee. Dr. Pritchard was called and reduced the fractures, but fears that amputation may be necessary. Mr. Ewen has many friends in this city, who trust the accident may not be as serious as reported.
