After high school Bill continued to help on the family farm and found the love of his life just across the Nebraska border, Alta Faye Dubel. They met through their parents' friendship and started dating after meeting at a dance in Burton, NE. They were married November 13, 1944 at the Broadbooks farm by Reverend Herald Timm after a judge in Springview refused to marry them. Bill and Alta's family grew by adopting two children, John and Lori.
Bill loved the farm and enjoyed his horses. He used them for plowing fields and rounding up the cattle. One of his favorite horses, "Pokey," was lost when the big red barn burned early one morning. As was normal in the small community, neighbors and friends were right there to help pick up the pieces and rebuild. There was always coffee and a pecan roll for all who stopped in to visit.
Bill and Alta retired in 1996 and moved to Gregory where they were members of First Assembly of God Church. Bill's bass voice could always be heard harmonizing while singing the hymns.
Bill enjoyed going to coffee and visiting with everyone he met. Bill had never met a stranger and could make anyone feel welcome and at ease.
Bill's wife passed on to be with the Lord in May of 2002. He spent the remaining years living in Colome and Winner.
Bill passed away on May 19th 2010 at the Winner Nursing Home.
