Mrs. Helen M. Axel, age 90, formerly of 501 Birchwood Drive, Francis Creek, and currently a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died early Wednesday morning, June 12, 2002 at St. Mary's Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, 2002 at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church in Francis Creek. The Rev. Theodore Hendricks will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with internment (sic) of her cremated remains to follow in the parish cemetery.

The former Helen Hessel was born March 25, 1912, in Francis Creek, daughter of the late Charles "C.J." and Laura Kassa Hessel. She attended St. Anne grade school and was a 1930 graduate of Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. She married Larry P. Axel Aug. 24, 1949 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Francis Creek. The couple resided in Francis Creek after their marriage. Larry preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1988. In the past Helen worked with her parents at the Hessel Supper Club in Francis Creek and was also a postal clerk in Francis Creek. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and St. Anne Altar Society, Francis Creek-Rockwood Senior Citizens and in the past was treasurer of the Francis Creek-Rockwood Senior Citizens.

Survivors include three sisters-in-law: Grace Hessel of Manitowoc: Ruth Axel of Tempe, Ariz.; and Jean Shapiro of Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. She was preceded in death by an infant sister: Florence; three brothers, Paul, Gardy and Richard Hessel; four sisters-in-law: Grace Hessel, Margaret Hessel, Theckla Hessel and Mona Axel; and two brothers-in-law; Marvin Shapiro and Dr. B. J. Shapiro.

Relatives and friends may call at St. Anne Catholic Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. A memorial fund has been established for St. Anne Catholic Church.

The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Kellnersville is serving the family.
