JOHN G. KUNZ

(1918 - 1997)


Mr. John G. (Jack) Kunz, age 79, of 4408 Rockwood Road, Manitowoc, died Thursday, February 20, 1997, at Two Rivers Community Hospital, Two Rivers.


Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Theodore Hendricks at 11 a.m. Monday, February 24, 1997, at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. Burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery, Francis Creek.


Jack was born February 18, 1918, in Denmark, son of the late Gottfried and Rose Kohout Kunz. He graduated from Mishicot High School in 1936, and the Manitowoc Teachers College in 1938. He continued his education at Oshkosh State Teachers College. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and graduated from Officers Training School. He then served in North African and European Theatres of War. During his military service he was awarded the Bronze Medal. In 1946, he was honorably discharged with the service rank of Captain. Jack and Mariana Stangel were married in Abelene, Texas, April 5, 1943. Together they owned and operated the Kunz Grocery Store in Rockwood until 1969. Jack then worked at Manitowoc Engineering until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church where he was a lecturer and had held several offices, Kubale-O'Connell VFw Post #6179 of Cato, and Knights of Columbus Council #710. He also had been very active as a scoutmaster for 10 years with Boy Scout Troup 145, for 15 years as a Manitowoc County Board Member, and several years as the town of Kossuth Chairman.


Survivors include his wife, Mariana; four children, Barbara (Bill) Bahnfleth, Bob (Pat) Kunz, all of Manitowoc, Gregory (Karen) Kunz, Waukesha, Michael (Katy) Kunz, Manitou Springs, Colo.; a brother, Leo (Alice) Kunz, Madison; eight grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Adolph and Clarence Kunz, and a sister, Eleanore Wiltman.


Friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the time of mass at 11 a.m. A prayer service will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. led by Father Ted, followed immediately by the VFW services of Kumbale-O'Connell Post #6179.
