Clarence Rief(sic) Is Killed In Blizzard: Highways Are All Blocked

One man was killed and traffic was completely paralyzed by a snow storm which ended today with a high wind and impenetrable drifts. Ten inches of sow fell during the storm.

Batteries of snow plows were expected to clear a way between Manitowoc and Two Rivers, but none of the other trunk highways was being opened late this afternoon. Otherwise drifts, some as high as 20 feet, completely isolated the county except for train service from the south.

Clarence Rief, 28, garage operator at Francis Creek, was the storm victim. He was almost instantly killed Sunday night when he lost control of his car on Highway 141 north of Rockwood while coming to Manitowoc to join his wife, visiting relatives here. The car turned over in the ditch and Rief was thrown from behind the wheel to his death.

The fatal accident resulted when Rief met his own garage partner on the highway in front of the Herman Specht farm. Rief was inbound toward Manitowoc and Neuser was northbound. Rief turned out to pass when his death occurred.

Dies In House
Neuser looked back a moment after the cars passed. He saw a flurry of snow and suspected the other driver suffered an accident. He stopped, went back and found Rief's car overturned in the ditch with the wheels in the air. Rief was lying on the pavement with a broken neck. Neuser with Erhardt Peterik and Alex Fischer removed Rief to the Specht farm home. He died a few minutes later. Coroner Rau of Two Rivers and Sheriff Max Hiller were called. The coroner announced there will be no inquest.

Mr. Rief was born at Francis Creek in 1906 and married Martha Seidl in 1929. He was proprietor of the Tourist garage at Francis Creek.

Survivors are his widow; a son, John; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Rief, Francis Creek, three brothers, Wilbur, Edward and Robert; six sisters, Mrs. Donald Shaw, and Helen, city; Marie, Rosalie, Florence and Arlett, at home.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
