Marlys J. Barlow was born in Watertown, South Dakota, the daughter of Lee A. and Mabel J. (Palm) Barlow. After high school, she attended Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, where she received her teaching certificate. She accepted her first teaching position for the 1952-53 term teaching second grade students in Redfield.
