Flying Tire Rim Kills Highway Shop Worker

One highway department worker was instantly killed and another injured at the county shop west of the Rosemere overhead late Monday afternoon when a tire rim from a large truck tire they were inflating snapped off.

James Wadzinski, 48, Rockwood, who was bending over the tire on a special rack received the full force of the blow from the bounding iron rim. He sustained a fractured skull. One side of his face was badly lacerated and the frontal lobe of the brain pierced.

Herbert Krueger Injured
Herbert Krueger, 32, was hit by the rim after it struck Wadzinski He sustained severe face lacerations.

The accident was the first fatality that has occurred at the county shops. Coroner Gerald Rau, Two Rivers, who was summoned, announced there would be no inquest.

According to Joseph Naidl, shop foreman who spoke to the two men less than two minutes before the accident, pressure on the iron rim around the inside of the heavy tire sprung the hoop off the wheel.

A tire tester found on the floor indicated that Wadzinski had just bent over the tire to test the air pressure when the rim suddenly loosened from the wheel. After striking the two men, the rim flew high in the air and against a wall of the shop, 20 feet away.

Killed Instantly.
Naidl and three other shop workers, Arthur Klackner, Leonard Meyer and Ernst Vogt, who were engaged in similar work on other tires, ran to the aid of the two men. Examination of Wadzinski indicated

Mr. Wadzinski, who operates a farm on Route 6, Manitowoc, between Rockwood and Francis Creek, had been employed each summer for four years. In addition to assisting in truck repairs at the shops he was also a member of the county crews oiling the highways.
