Author, Motion Picture Screenwriter. He will be remembered for his penning of the novel "Save the Tiger" which was made into a 1973 motion picture adaptation. He received an Academy Award nomination and Jack Lemmon earned an Oscar for his role in the film. Additionally, he is known for the bestseller "The Formula" (1979), which was made into a 1980 motion picture adaptation that starred Marlon Brando and George C. Scott. Born Stephen H. Shagan, to Jewish parents, his father was the proprietor of a pharmacy. He dropped out of high school to serve with the United States Coast Guard during World War II and during this period, he developed an interest in writing. During the 1950s, he relocated to Hollywood and landed a job as a stagehand for a theater and later worked on sets at MGM Studios. He served as associate producer for the "Tarzan" film series during the 1960s and began writing screenplays for TV, initially with the television movie "A Step Out of Line" (1971). His novel "City of Angels" (1975) was the basis for the motion picture "Hustle" (1975), which starred Burt Reynolds. He shared an Academy Award for his co-penning of the screenplay for the film "Voyage of the Damned" (1976). His other screenplay credits include "The Sicilian" (1987) and "Primal Fear" (1996).
