PEARSONS BIG LIVESTOCK SHOW BACKERS
Bluntzer couple killed in 1937 Ford on their way to a classic auto show By Sara Lee Fernandez
When ]. W. and Jeannette Pearson were killed in a traffic collision Tuesday, the Nueces County Junior Livestock lost two great supporters.
"They were big believers in the program and what it could do for youths," said Imogene Hayek, show manager.
James William Pearson, his wife, Jeannette, and family founded Pearson's Welding and Construction and PWC Industries. The couple lived in the Bluntzer area.
Through their business the couple were big supporters of the show, Hayek said. Their contributions ranged from financial help to being a presence at the show.
The Pearsons' grandchildren and children were also involved in the stock show program. Their granddaughter, Barbie Bowen had the grand champion lamb at this year's show.
The Pearsons, members of the National Street Rod Association, were traveling north on U.S. Highway 77 in Schulenburg on their way to a car show when they attempted to pass another car in a no passing zone, according to the Department of Public Safety.
The 1937 Ford they were in attempted to move to the left and then flipped sideways in front of a 1985 International flatbed truck. The collision injured the driver of the truck, DPS officials said.
"They were one of the greatest couples I've ever met," said Sharon Teeter Harlan, a longtime family friend. "It's a great loss for this community."
J. W. Pearson, 64, was a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Welding Society. Jeannette Pearson, 61, collected cherub angels.
"They were people people," said Tim Bowen, the couple's son-in-law. "They loved people. They could get along with anyone and they would bend over backwards to do something for you."
The Pearsons are survived by four daughters, Connie Williams of Conroe, Cheryl Darden and Robin Bowen, both of Robstown and Peggy Somerville of Oklahoma; three sons, James Pearson of Abilene, Jay Garrett of San Patricio and Rick Garrett of Bandera; a sister, Sylvelen Gill of Kendalia; a brother, Buddy Harrell of Freeport; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 3115 Ocean Drive. Burial will be in Seaside Memorial Park.
Maxwell P. Dunne is in charge of arrangements.
