Harry Morton Hoffman was the beloved son of Ira F. Hoffman and Jennie E. Russell. Harry was born on Nov. 30, 1874 in Bennington, Bennington Co., Vermont and died on Feb. 5, 1945 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI at the age of 70. On Sep. 12, 1918, Harry Hoffman was age 43 when he applied for his WWI Draft Registration Card. Harry Morton Hoffman served as a Private in Company B, 6th Massachusetts Infantry. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War (date of enlistment 5-6-1898, date of discharge 1-21-1899). His paternal family arrived in Duchess County, NY in 1710 and his mother's include at least 8 people who arrived on the Mayflower. His mother's father was Daniel Morton Russell, who served three years in the First Vermont Cavalry, was captured twice and wounded once, and died of his wounds in Bennington in 1878. His father Ira was too young to serve in the Civil War, but three of his uncles did. In 1895 Harry made his girlfriend Jesse Watson pregnant and they were married in Fitchburg, MA where he was working as a machinist. [At that time both were from Hoosick, NY]. She lost the baby and perhaps he resented that he was forced into marriage. In January 1898, Harry made Jesse pregnant with Elliott Wheelock Hoffman. In April 1898 Harry enlisted in the 6th Massachusetts Infantry when the Spanish-American War began. The regiment was tasked to invade Puerto Rico, but he contracted typhoid fever on board the transport and was evacuated to Long Island where the Army set up a typhoid fever camp and where the treatment was full immersion in ice water to control the fever. He was medically discharged in January 1899 and sent home. He immediately made Jesse pregnant with Albert H. Hoffman and then enlisted in a volunteer unit under the name Thomas Mitchell and went to the Philippines to fight Emilio Aguinaldo for the next three years. According to a record in Fold.3, Thomas Mitchell, born in 1873, was stationed in Manila in 1901. Harry came home after his enlistment and immediately made Jesse pregnant with Beatrice L. Hoffman. Harry worked as a machinist in Worcester and Gardner, MA, West Brattleboro, VT and finally Hartford, CT. When WWI began Elliott Hoffman enlisted in the Navy (he always said he was the first man to volunteer in CT). Harry registered, but sometime in the fall of 1917 abandoned his family for good and went to Detroit to work for Henry Ford, taking with him his CT girlfriend Rose DeLima Mandeville. His divorce is dated 1920 and he and Rose were married afterward. Harry and Rose's address was 1230 Marlborough Ave., Detroit, MI. Harry was buried at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Oakland Co., MI. Rose D. Mandeville, age 45, was married to Harry M. Hoffman, age 47, on Jul. 24, 1922 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.
