Cittanova born Don Carmelo Albanese was installed parish priest of San Ferdinando at twenty seven years of age on May 24, 1908. Envious of his appointment, Abate Antonino Naso poisoned his wine during mass celebration with sulfuric acid, with Albanese passing away in minutes, followed by the sexton Carmelo Basile six days later, whom upon seeing the neo-parish priest collapsing, drank the remaining wine to verify whether something was wrong with it. Naso was successively sentenced to life imprisonment.
