Mr. Sweeney attended Allegheny College at Meadsville. In 1857, he arrived in Rock Island, where he was made the principal of the Second Ward school. In his spare time, he studied law under the direction of the Hon. George Pleasants. He went on to become a prominent attorney in the area.
He married Harriet E. Allen in 1862, who bore him five children - three surviving their father: Mrs. F. S. Kenfield of Berry Co., MI; and Edward A. and William J. Sweeney, of Rock Island; as well as a sister, Mrs. Margaret Magill of Silverlake, KS. He also leaves a widow, Emma (Tunnel), whom he married in Oct 1894 after his first wife died in 1889.
The funeral was held from the home, and burial was in the family plot at Chippiannock Cemetery; graveside services were private.
