According to legend, Agatha was born c. 231 into a wealthy family. A beautiful young woman, she dedicated her life and her virginity to God. She caught the eye of Roman magistrate Quintianus. When Agatha rejected his advances, Quintianus sent her to a brothel for a month. When she refused to accept customers, she was assaulted and tortured. However, her faith in God stood firm. For this, Quintianus had her thrown in prison, where she was tortured again, with her breasts being cut off. She was denied medical care, but St. Peter came to her in a vision, and healed her wounds. A few days later, Quintianus commanded that she be rolled over hot coals. As she neared death, an earthquake struck. One of Quintianus’ friends was struck down, and Quintianus himself fled. Agatha thanked God for putting an end to her pain and died. Her feast day is February 5th.
