US Congressman. Best known for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which reformed the regulation of publicly traded companies after the Enron scandal, he served in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 2007. He was also known for his successful fight, in 1981, with then Senator Howard Metzenbaum, to block Mobil Oil from taking over his hometown Marathon Oil. He was first elected in a special election to fill the vacant Ohio 4th District seat vacated by the death of Tennyson Guyer. He became Chairman of the House Committee in 2001 and served in that role until his retirement. He was a 1966 graduate of Miami University and obtained his law degree from The Ohio State University in 1969. He first was an FBI special Agent from 1969 to 1972 and then ran for the Ohio House of Representatives from the 82nd district, where he served from 1973 to 1981. After his time in Congress, he was a vice chairman at NASDAQ and then a lobbyist with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. He died of lung cancer and was chairman of the Lung Cancer Alliance board of directors at his death.
