Mass of Christian Burial for John William Murphy, age 77, will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 195 Amicks Ferry Road, Chapin, S.C. A rosary service will be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (Today) with visitation following until 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, S.C.

Mr. Murphy died Nov. 16, 2009. Born Jan. 2, 1932, in New London, Wis., he was a son of the late Dr. James and Eulalia Landgraf Murphy. He graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science degree and from Colorado State University with a Master's Degree in Education. He touched the lives of many students starting as a teacher at Valders High School in 1964 and retiring as a guidance counselor in 1991. He enjoyed golf, gardening, watching the Green Bay Packers, spending time with his grandchildren, getting together with friends and family, and spending summers in Door County.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Marie Murphy of Irmo; sons and daughters-in-law: James and Phyllis Lewis Murphy, Rolla, Mo.; Thomas and Janis Murphy, Irmo; John Murphy, Okauchee, Wis.; grandchildren: Erin Murphy, Maryville, Mo.; Patrick Murphy, Marn Lewis, both of Rolla; Caitlin Murphy, Irmo; sisters: Mary Irish, Shawano, Wis.; Margaret Trainor, Pontiac, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law: Gerald and Caroline Murphy, Waupaca, Wis.; sister-in-law: Toni Nickel, Waupun, Wis.; brother-in-law: Jack Nickel, Waupun, Wis; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers: Pat and Tom; and sister, Betty.
