US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he had a law practice in Augusta, Georgia. He joined the Confederate Army, served in the Washington Light Artillery Company of Augusta, as a 2nd lieutenant and was brevetted Major. From 1860 to 1865, he was a member of the State house of representatives and a member of the Democratic National Committee, 1876 to 1884. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth, Fiftieth, and Fifty-first Congresses serving from 1885 to 1891. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
