Billie was born September 20, 1923 near Bridgeport, Texas, the daughter of William and Rosa Lyle Spaw.
Billie was a graduate of Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas.
Billie and John W. Gates were married in 1944 in Texas. After WWII, the couple and their daughter moved to Portland, Oregon. Billie taught at Maplewood and Oliver P. Lent schools in the Portland School District for 33 years. Billie was member of several education and honorary associations. She was a member of Lynchwood Church in Gresham, Oregon.
Billie was widowed three times. She was married to John W. Gates (1944 to 1985), Chet Tracer (1987 to 2001), and Harold Gray (2005 to 2007).
She was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting throughout her life. She was a loving, kind, and beautiful woman. She always thought the best of everyone and never found fault. Billie is survived by her daughter, Leah Gates Kimball (Phillip); brother, Lannie Spaw of Portland, Oregon; nephews, Larry Gates and Mark Spaw; and niece, Shirley Gates.
A Funeral Service will be held Friday, April 3, 2015, 11:00 AM at Batemen Carroll Funeral Home, Gresham, Oregon.
A burial will follow at Willamette National Cemetery.
