Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1964 and 1967 to 1975), he played at the outfielder position with the Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees. Born Walter Allen Williams, he was raised in San Francisco, California, where he attended Galileo High School and later City College of San Francisco, where he studied Criminology. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Houston Colt .45s, he marked his major league debut with the Astros on April 21, 1964. During his years with the White Sox, he established himself as a fan favorite. In 1969, he secured the starting right fielder position and produced career-highs with 143 hits and a .304 batting average. He extended his playing career in Japan and Mexico and following his retirement as a player, he served as a coach with the Chicago White Sox in addition to managing in the Minor Leagues.
