In WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 28 July 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He died in the Veterans Adm. Med. Ctr, in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Talmage married Ina Kate Gentry on 3 September 1954 in Putnam County, Tennessee. The marriage was solemnized by Harry L. Upperman, M.G. Per the marriage record Talmage was 29 years old, born on April 7, 1925; his residence was Route 2, Cookeville, Tennessee. Ina was 24 years old, born August 11, 1930; her residence was 371 W. Stevens, Cookeville, Tennessee.

Ina is the daughter of the late Hershall Gentry and Prilla Ann Massa. When Talmage died in 2002, he was survived by his wife.
