Born in Sicily, Italy, Dr. Scalia lived most of his life in New York and New Jersey. He received his bachelor's degree from Rutger's University and his doctor of philosophy at Columbia University. He was an exchange fellow to the University of Florence in Italy and later joined the faculty of Brooklyn College where he taught romance languages, retiring in 1969.
