Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During service in the Union Army in the Civil War, he rose from 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster of the 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry to Colonel and Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Tennessee. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
