Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester, NY), Friday, March 29, 1895, p. 4:
"Mrs. Mary Kirkland Holley, one of the best known residents of Wayne county, died at the home of her son, John M. Holley, La Crosse, Wisconsin, where she has been living for the past five years, Wednesday morning aged 92 years. Deceased was born in Utica in 1803, her father being Hon. Joseph Kirkland, who was a member of the constitutional convention of 1801. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lyons for over sixty-seven years, and is survived by one son, John M. Holley, a prominent banker of La Crosse, Wisconsin; one daughter, Mrs. John T. Clark of Portage, Wisconsin, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Among her relatives is a niece, Mrs. J. Pierpont Morgan, of New York city. The remains are expected to reach Lyons to-morrow morning."

Wisconsin State Register (Portage, WI), Saturday, March 30, 1895:
"Mrs. John T. Clark’s Mother is Dead.
Mrs. Mary Kirkland Holley died Wednesday forenoon at La Crosse, aged 91. She was the daughter of General Joseph Kirkland of Utica, N. Y., where she was born in 1804. She was also a direct descendant on her mother’s side of Gov. William Bradford of Massachusetts. Her home for more than sixty years was at Lyons, N. Y. Her husband and six of her eight children are buried there, and she will be laid beside them. Her surviving children are John M. Holley, cashier of the State Bank of La Crosse, and Mrs. John T. Clark of Portage. Another relative is Joseph Kirkland, author of stories of Western life, who is her nephew. Mrs. Holley resided in Portage a number of years with her daughter, going to La Crosse to reside last fall."

Note: Her husband John M. Holley (who died in 1848) is reported to be buried in the Lyons Rural Cemetery. Mary’s obituary notice states that six children are buried with him, and that she was to be interred beside them. However, there are no Holley (or Roys) headstones recorded at the Lyons Rural Cemetery. There were either no markers to begin with or they have not withstood the test of time.
