As a young woman, Johanna had served as church organist for the church her father served in Manitowoc. Johanna continued as a active member of the churches her husband served, in the ladies organizations at St. John and Salem Churches in Lafayette Ind., and was an active member of Immanuel UCC in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, and St. Anthony Park Congregational UCC in St. Anthony Park, Minn.
