Thornton was the son of Thornton Watson and Cleopha Meiners. He was stabbed by an assailant and the knife penetrated his heart. He died several hours later as a result of the wound. Thornton and his date and his sister and her date were in downtown Louisville when the assailant made derogatory comments about the girls. Thornton had knocked the man down and when he got up he chased after Thornton, stabbing him. He was 18 years old.
