The Passing of Lee Gorgas
Lee Gorgas, taken to the Sierra hospital a week ago last Saturday, suffering from a critical affliction of the kidneys, died at that institution at 12 o'clock Tuesday night. Little hope was held out by the physicians in charge of his case, and that only in case of a surgical operation. Owing to his condition it was impossible to perform the operation at once and it was deferred until Tuesday. The nature of his illness and the attendant shock of the operation were followed in twelve hours by his death.
Deceased was a native and pioneer of Tuolumne County, having been born at Yankee Hill in 1857 and was in the 64th year of his age at the time of his death. After his school days he entered and mastered the trade of millwright and subsequently that of a carpenter. He was an able and conscientious workman in either trade and in his association with his fellowman he was genial in social life and honest in business transactions. He attended strictly to his own business, and consequently never meddled with that of others. He had a good feeling for everybody and unostentatiously he aided the distressed all along the pathway of life. He ever held the confidence and esteem of the community, the love of wife and children, and his passing is marked with regret by all our people.
Beside his widow, Mary E. Gorgas, four children, County Clerk Ed L. Gorgas, Mrs. Stella Porter, Miss Maude Gorgas of San Francisco, and Miss Gladys Gorgas of Sonora, are left to morn. In their sorrow they have the heartfelt sympathy of the community.
The funeral was held at 9:45 this Friday morning from the family residence on Stewart Street. The remains were taken to the St. Patrick church were mass was said by Rev. J. Gilmartin for the repose of his soul. Interment was in the Mountain View cemetery.
