Luanne Nettleton, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, departed this life into eternity with Jesus on Saturday, March 5 2016.

Luanne was infectiously positive. She always greeted family with the most genuinely excited and heartfelt gleam in her eye, and she lavished those around her with love and compassion. Even during moments of pain, she couldn’t help from smiling and radiating kindness. Her cheerfulness and delight quickly won people over, and their favor could not have been bestowed upon a more grateful recipient.

She loved puzzles, the Mariners, hand-held poker games, coffee and, most especially, romance novels. She was never quite warm enough in her petite frame, usually to be found near the electric heater under layers of blankets.

Luanne’s antecedents hailed from Norway, her grandparents immigrating to the U.S. by way of Canada, eventually settling in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where they owned and operated a general store. Her parents came to Vancouver, Washington, where they raised eight children. It was there Luanne met the love of her life, Ronald Nettleton. They both enjoyed singing and found themselves together in Vancouver High’s acapella choir. After graduating in 1951, the pair married and started a family in Vancouver. They moved to Camarillo, California where Ron worked as a Ventura County Deputy Sheriff and part time milkman. He often complained about all the steps he had to climb to deliver fresh milk to Johnny Cash. In the mid-60s, they came back to Washington and settled in Wapato.

Luanne worked part time as a teacher’s aide in class with her kids, but mostly, she stayed home to raise her family, where she was known by her children’s friends as “Momma Lu.” She loved to sing. Her brothers and their wives would come to the house and gather around the piano for hours, playing and singing. Lu and her husband Ron were acknowledged to have the best voices in the group.

After Ron died, Luanne moved from the lower valley to Yakima to be closer to her children. For a few years she lived in Port Townsend, Washington, where her mother joined her from southern California. They both eventually moved back to Yakima, reuniting four generations of the family. For the past 35 years, she reveled in her grandchildren, taking pride in their accomplishments and marveling at how handsome and beautiful each was. She was known and loved by all of her kids and grandkids for her joyous and loving personality. She positively beamed anytime she saw her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Nothing gave her more happiness than family. Needless to say, Luanne was one of the happiest people alive.

Luanne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ron, her daughter Susan, her grandson Trevor, and brothers Carlotte, Bud, and Burt. She is survived by her children Mike, Dick (Fran), Rhonda Taylor (Mike), and Skip (Sandy), grandchildren Sean, Amanda, Alex, Ryan, Brian, Matthew, Jeffery, Taylor, and Kaylii, also Sherie, Laurie, Tricia, Russell, Michael, Wendy, John, and Thad, and 13 great grandchildren (with two more on the way). She is also survived by her siblings, Dale (Mary Jane), Dennis (Nancy), Ray (Lisa), Kathy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was blessed with many wonderful friends (especially Jan and Carmen). They would often gather and gab in the sunshine while walking their little dogs. She was also blessed with wonderful care-givers who were with her off and on during the day to offer assistance. Julie was like a daughter to her and her children, Tianna and Malachi becoming extended grandkids.

The family would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the amazing professionals at Memorial Hospital (5 West and Tele), and Cottage in the Meadow for their loving care of Luanne the past 2 weeks. To the medical staff, Drs. Lo, Lewis, Ong, and Harrison, you were so very skillful and considerate, and we thank you for your care. Each one of you helped us to come to terms with and walk through the end of her life with as much confidence and joy as humanly possible. We would also like to thank Drs. Kwon, Olden, and Teerink, for keeping Luanne healthy and happy in the last years of her life.

We were truly blessed to have such a loving, amiable, cheerful woman in our lives. She always had a smile on her face and happiness in her heart. She knew Jesus as her savior and it is with confidence that we say “until we meet again.”

The family would like to suggest the Yakima Humane Society for anyone wishing to make a donation in Luanne’s name.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday March 10th at Rainier Memorial Center (2807 Terrace Heights Drive). Funeral services will be at 1 pm on Friday, March 11th at the same location, followed by burial at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Rainier Memorial Center of Yakima.
