The father of Will Clifton was also named Will Clifton, born in the state of Virginia about 1820. He was living in Kansas and decided to pay a visit to his children on the Kansas-Missouri border. It was wintertime when he arrived, and he died at the Gunnels farm and was buried at Sharon Cemetery.

Will was born Oct 14, 1846, in Jefferson County, Missouri. He came to Bates County where he met Margaret C. Groves, the daughter of William Thomas and Sarah C. Smith Groves. They married on February 7, 1872. She was born April 26, 1852, in Pike County, Illinois. After their marriage they lived on farms in the Amsterdam and Merwin area. An Englishman owned a lot of farms and Will Clifton farmed for him. After he became too ill to do farm work, he went to live at the Sam Gunnels home where he died on March 15, 1922.
