Swedish prince. He was Crown Prince of Sweden at birth and later became an Austrian prince of nobility, belonging to the Oldenburg Dynasty. He was the only surviving adult son of King Gustav IV Adolph and Queen Frederica. At age 10, in 1809, he and his family had to leave Sweden after his father was deposed. Sweden's new Queen Charlotte posed as a supporter of the so-called Gustavian Party which wanted him to return as heir to the throne, which however never happened. In 1816, as an Austrian imperial officer, he got the title of Count of Itterburg, and in 1829 Emperor Francis II created him Prince of Vasa (Wasa) in their nobility. He was field marshal-lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army as of 1836. In 1830 he married his first cousin Princess Louise of Baden. They were divorced 13 years later, having had a son who died shortly after birth and a daughter who married King Albert I of Saxony. In 1884 King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway had Gustav's and his little son's coffins moved from German locations to Stockholm, to be buried beside his father.
